DIY Halloween -How To Make Haunted Manhole Cover

This is an easy project to add some creepy vibes to your front yard. We had some large foam floor pieces left over from a few other projects and decided they would be perfect for our decoration hack.

What We Used:

24″ by 24″ foam floor sectionSharp knife
MarkerSmall nail
Brush/paint: black, grey, and orange, sealerstring
Tape measurePlywood
SandpaperGlue (we used hot glue)
Jigsaw
Manhole Cover - Foam Floor Tiles

These foam floor pieces were originally purchased as a floor mat and later used as part of our backyard water park.

How We Made It:

  1. Find the centre of the foam piece and mark with marker
  2. Tie a string to the nail and place the nail in the marked centre
  3. Tie a marker to the other end of string with a 10.5″ string length
  4. Draw a 21″ circle in the foam
  5. Tie a loop in the string and draw a smaller 20″ circle in the foam
  6. Carefully cut out both circles and sand the edges
    1. The inner circle is the manhole cover – we added a couple “pick holes” holes to this
    2. The outer circle can be flipped outside down leaving a smooth rim
  7. To ensure the foam didn’t blow away, we cut 21″ circle out of plywood and 17 ” circle out of centre of that. We glued these to the foam pieces
  8. We painted the whole thing black and then dry brushed grey and orange to give it a rusted look
  9. To help protect it from the elements we added a layer of clear paint

We dug a few inches down under this manhole cover and added some skeleton heads and arms. On Halloween we will add some lights to ensure it has a nice glow inside!
